The initial tender has been released for the installation of five new lifts, an enhanced and more efficient snow production system, and comprehensive slope construction works.

Narvikfjellet Allmenn AS is responsible for the construction of the sporting infrastructure at the resort, which includes lifts, snow production systems along with associated construction work, slope grading, and permanent installations such as the A-net and lighting. The completion of the sporting section of the facility is scheduled for the fall of 2027.

The Board of Narvikfjellet Allmenn places significant emphasis on the post-use of the investments to ensure the facility also functions as an everyday resort. The goal is for Narvikfjellet, following the expansion, to serve as a venue for all, catering both to families and recreational users, as well as serving as an international sports facility.

Narvik is to become an important venue for various events in the future. Sports activities will be prioritized, including training, children’s races, FIS events, junior championships, World Cup events, and the World Championships. To achieve this, it is essential that the facility is expanded so that events can be held in parallel with the resort’s regular operations.

A significant amount of construction work will be required for all downhill slopes, with some sections needing to be established from the ground up. Additionally, snow production systems will be installed on all slopes from bottom to top. This will require the installation of water pipelines with manholes, fiber optics, and electrical connections running from the base to the summit of each slope.

There are substantial synergies in completing the development primarily over a two-year period. It is cost-effective to carry out much of the excavation and construction work simultaneously for the slopes, lift trenches, snow production systems, and lighting. There are also plans to build a water reservoir to ensure an adequate water supply during the relatively short cold periods in late autumn and

early winter. This reservoir will provide free fill material for construction work, eliminating the need for truck transport through the town center of Narvik, thereby aligning better with sustainability goals.

Furthermore, considerable collaboration with the reindeer herding industry in the area, from Skaret to the downhill start, is being considered. The reindeer migration routes are taken into account by planning construction roads to be revegetated, minimizing traffic in the high mountain areas to the extent necessary for the resort’s operations. Additionally, temporary construction above the ground from Linken to the second peak is planned to accommodate reindeer herding and future sustainability considerations.

Tender and Contract Strategy

Narvikfjellet Allmenn has issued a public tender in Doffin, which includes the following:

  • Lift Deliveries
    a. Lift 1
    b. Lift 2
    c. Lift 3
    d. Linken Express (chairlift to Linken)
    e. Temporary lift to the second peak
    f. Option: Gondola from the finish area to Øvre
  • Snow Production for All Slopes
  • Construction Work Related to the Two Above Deliveries
  • Construction Work for the Men’s, Women’s, and Service Slopes

Much of the construction work for snow production and lifts is interdependent and must be closely coordinated. The largest contract will involve the procurement of the lifts. As such, it is anticipated that the lift supplier will assemble and oversee the tender process from the supplier’s side.

The tender is expected to be awarded in late March or early April 2025.
The remaining projects related to the sporting facility expansion will be issued as separate tenders during 2025. These include:

  • Safety (permanent installations such as A-net)
  • Lighting (poles, floodlights, including controls)
  • Power grids and transformer stations
  • Fiber and signal cables
  • The Finish Area (blasting, earthmoving, and leveling)

Most of the construction will take place during the summer season to minimize disruptions to the winter season. Operating hours for the summer gondola will be slightly reduced due to construction work in 2025 and 2026. By the winter of 2026, however, we will offer an improved experience for guests, with a chairlift to Linken and a new, easier descent from Øvre.
