Narvik is applying for the Alpine World Ski Championships 2029 – and one of the world’s foremost alpinists of all time will contribute to secure the AWSC in Narvik/Norway 2029!
The Norwegian Ski Federation (NSF) and Narvik municipality are doing as they have previously announced: They are applying for the 2029 Alpine World Championships, with Narvik and Norway as host nation. The application is submitted on 1 May 2023.
Kjetil Andre Aamodt (51), who from 1991 to 2006 won 8 medals in the Olympics and 12 in the WC, has joined the board of the applicant company Alpin VM 2029 AS.
«Slopes from summit to fjord will give alpine sports an international boost. The slopes provide spectacular pictures, and with an alpine resort in the middle of the city, this will be a unique and compact event, says Kjetil Andre Aamodt about Norway’s candidate, Narvik.
«Narvikfjellet has, as the foremost alpine resort in the Arctic, solid event experience. And hospitality and a strong local commitment have become a trademark, he says.
That Narvik did not get the AWC 2027 was not surprising.
«Very few applicant nations are selected as host nations in the first round. But a particularly strong application and very good presentations have made Narvik better known.
«Remember, Norway has never hosted the AWSC, apart from in 1952 at the same time as the Olympics. But we have 67 medals in alpine skiing, of which 25 are gold.
«Of course we will organize the AWSC on home ground, says Kjetil Andre Aamot.
The board of the international skiing federation FIS will award the World Alpine Championships 2029 at a board meeting in Reykjavik in May 2024.
